Read it later apps make you more productive

9 November 2025·seedling·Sabiqul Hoque

Read it later apps are applications designed to take text from an article and collate them for reading and processing (not for hoarding, hence it makes it different from an archiving tool). They make you more productive in the idea of spending less time reading in two ways:

  1. You might find a useless article relevant in the moment and if you manage to save it to a read it later app, then when you go to read this stuff later, you will realise how pointless it is. Then you don’t even waste the time to watch it in the first place.
  2. A good read‑it later app formats the text, removes the bloat and ads and presents the text in a readable format that maximises attention and enables the ability to process text efficiently.

Further Thoughts

I’m currently using wallabag as my read‑it‑later app, and it’s actually working pretty good. It’s actually pretty good as a read‑it‑later app mainly because it’s self‑hosted and open source, which makes it quite extensible. For example, I have implemented automatic summaries without any AI token use from a third party and just using my own local AI.

Using it with wombag.el inside of emacs has added further extensibility and capturing methods that streamlines writing, notetaking and capturing.
