Click the subscribe to the deck button just below
Click the subscribe to the deck button just below

Click then Manage Protected Data and select fields to protect; at least “Personal Notes” and “Missed Questions”, and type “leech” (without “”) into the protected tags field.

    🧐
    What are these for?
    Protected data

Protected data are portions of the card that you don’t want to be overwritten by updates and changes to the card. For example, every card has a personal notes field where you might put a screenshot or link to your university lectures or you might also tag certain cards by your own exams in medical school. You don’t want to lose these tags or information so make sure to add them here first.

    Personal Notes field

This is where you might put notes or links to your own resources. Whether that be from your university lectures, local guidelines or other textbooks. To not have these overwritten by updates to the card on synchronising with ankihub make sure to add this to the protected fields.

    Missed Questions field

This is where you might put screenshots of questions related to the card which you got wrong or correct (e.g. from emedici, amboss, clinical key). You don’t want to loose these screenshots so its important to protect them from synchronisation.

    Leech cards

Leeches are cards you get repeatedly wrong. Anki automatically adds the leech tag to these cards so you can easily find them and review them separately. Synchronising with the MalleusCM deck will result in the leech tag being removed from these cards.

Add whatever tags you’d like to protect from synchronisation with AnkiHub. For example I have tags for particular exams in medical school (e.g year_4::cardiology).

📚 Studying with the Deck

Malleus CM is organised by a sophisticated system of tags and subtags based on Subjects, Rotations, Therapeutic Guidelines, Universities, and other key areas of study. It is not organised by sub-decks like some other popular decks.

  1. 🔐 Suspend all cards

By default all 5000+ cards will be ‘unsuspended’, to begin suspend all cards. Specific cards can then be later unsuspended based on whatever area of study you are covering.

Open the Browser by clicking Browse (keyboard shortcut: B)

find ‘Tags’ in the sidebar, click the drop down, find and select ‘#Malleus_CM’.

Select any card in the main window of the Browser, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A (Windows) or ⌘ + A (MacOS) to select all cards. Then right click the selected cards > Toggle Suspend.

All of the cards should be now be yellow (meaning they are suspended), if they are not just repeat this step.

This only needs to be done once.

  2. 🔎 Find an area of study

All cards can be unsuspended and entered into circulation from the browser. To find an area of study locate this through the tags, select the cards and un-suspend them. Follow the example scenarios below:

    📌
You can use the malleus helper addon (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/620451841?cb=1736747983225) to easily find cards to unsuspend.
    1. Go to tools → Malleus Find/Add Cards in the menu bar from the anki homescreen or you can click the malleus button on the left side of the anki browser window
    2. Select the database you want to search (subjects, pharmacology, eTG, rotation …)
    3. Enter a search term (e.g. “paeds emergencies”) and press enter
    1. Optional: you can change the Tag dropdown to a subtag (e.g. Management) to find cards only related to management
    2. Select the pages you want to find cards on (or click select all)
    3. Click find cards
    🧠
You’ve just finished watching neurology lectures on Parkinson Disease, and now you want to review the relevant cards
    • Find Parkinson’s cards under Tags in the browser sidebar: > #Malleus_CM > #Subjects > Neurology_&_Ophthalmology > 11_Degenerative_Disorders > Parkinson_Disease (alternatively use the add-on above by searching “Parkinson Disease” in the subjects database)
    • Select all of the cards that show up and right click > Toggle Suspend, keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J (Windows) or ⌘ + J (MacOS)
    💡
Tip: Don’t know which tag to find the tag you are looking for? Simply search our notion website with the search button at the top right

Search for “Parkinson Disease” and open the page. You will find the hierarchy to find the relevant tags in the Anki Browser:

    🤰
You’re beginning your obstetrics and gynaecology rotation, and you want to review all of the relevant cards
    • Find O&G cards under Tags in the browser sidebar: > #Malleus_CM > #Resources_by_Rotation > Obstetrics_&_Gynaecology (alternatively use the add-on above by changing the database selector from subjects to rotation and searching “obs”)
    • Select all of the cards that show up and right click > Toggle Suspend, keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J (Windows) or ⌘ + J (MacOS)
    💡
You are doing questions from the emedici website but oh no you just got a question wrong. You want to find the relevant cards in the Malleus Clinical Medicine Anki Deck
    • Easily find the tags with our new chrome extension
    • You will also need to download and install the anki-connect extension
    • Once you have those, it's as easy as clicking the extension in your toolbar while Anki is running. This will pull up an Anki Browser window of all the relevant cards. You can look at these cards and unsuspend the cards you want to study (and even move these to a filtered deck for dedicated studying!!)

💡
Please refer to the Submission Guidelines for more detail - the Card Submission Checklist is an abridged version that can also be used.

AnkiHub allows users to make submissions for either new cards or suggest changes to existing cards.

Please consider viewing existing cards in the deck as another way to learn what sort of cards we approve!

🎉 Creating a New Card
  1. ✍️ Write the card

New cards can be created by clicking “Add” (keyboard shortcut: A) on the front page. Ensure that card type is set to “MalleusCM - Cloze (Malleus Clinical Medicine / Stapedius)”. If not your submission will not work.

Type up the card and place the cloze deletions with keyboard shortcut Ctrl + ⇧ + C (Windows) or ⌘ + ⇧ + C (MacOS).

Ensure you follow the Submissions Guidelines.

For guidance on writing better cards see: Untitled.

    Cloze deletions can be created with this button, keyboard shortcut, or manually typed in as {{c1::cloze}}
    Cloze deletions can be created with this button, keyboard shortcut, or manually typed in as {{c1::cloze}}
  2. 📝 Reference the card

Fill in the Source field with a link an accepted reference and an access date. See Submission Guidelines for a complete list of acceptable resources. Consider using AMA (Vancouver) as the citation style - examples here: AMA: Getting Started - AMA 11th Referencing Guide - Library Guides at James Cook University (jcu.edu.au).

All cards need an author, source and access date as a bare minimum.

  3. 🏷️ Tag the card
    💡
This is critically important. Failure to adequately tag your card will likely result in rejection.

We have tried to make the process as straightforward as possible, and have recorded a video outlining the process here, as well as a written explanation underneath.

    💡
For cards using specific resources (e.g. eTG) there are further tagging requirements. See Specific Resources below.

All cards must, at minimum, be tagged with at least one Subject Tag, one Rotation Tag, and a single Yield Tag. A card may fit multiple subject and rotation tags; it is fine to add these. Often this is done for you (e.g. Acute Otitis Media is tagged by the rotation tags: Cardiology & Paediatrics).

Pharmacology, OSCEs, Clinical Guidelines, eTG guidelines and other categories have their own Additional Special Tags, which can be found as a separate tab in the Tags Database.

We have tried to make the tagging process as straightforward as possible, and have recorded a video outlining the process, as well as a written explanation underneath.

    💡
Note that the video demonstrates creating a card from an eTG guideline. Note that our main Subject Tags database does not have all of our diseases linked to eTG, and therefore you may need to manually search for both the eTG guideline (if using as resource) as well as the associated disease page for the condition (and likely copy over the 10_Management terminal tag(s) from that page).

    How to Tag

There are three ways to go about doing this:

    1) Malleus Anki Helper Method (RECOMMENDED)
    1. Install the Malleus Anki Helper Add-on linked here: Malleus Anki Helper Addon - AnkiWeb, as shown in the video below.
    1. Watch the video series below for details on how to use the plugin.
    📢
Note that some pages may be missing (especially when searching the eTG database) - if this is the case, please contact us and we will look at adding the page manually so it shows up in the add-on’s search window.
    2) Search Method
    💡
Watch the video below for a demonstration; otherwise we have a written guide underneath. Please note this while this method still works, in most cases we would encourage users to use the first method listed above when creating cards, by installing and using the Malleus Anki Helper Add-on due its ease of use. It also integrates directly within Anki saving the need to use a web browser.
    1. Simply click the search button at the very top right of the website and search for the disease you’re after (e.g. Acute Otitis Media)
      📢
Please note that when searching on Notion you can identify the relevant origin of the pages by the different icons.

Most pages arise from the Subject Tags database, signified by the white stethoscope icon in the search (ie. Acute Otitis Media). If you are searching for a topic, rather than a specific disease (ie. Antenatal Care), you may come across a slightly different topic page, signified by the white info icon.

The main difference between subject “disease” and “topic” pages is topic pages do not have terminal sub-pages (ie. 01_Epidemiology) like the disease pages, and usually (but not always) sit under *General tags. They are used to create cards on broad topics that do not fit neatly within individual single diseases (ie. Antenatal Care, Approach to the Seriously Unwell Child).

Note that other pages from other databases (ie. eTG Complete Tags, Pharmacology) will also appear here… they each have their respective icon as well.

As a general rule of thumb, if there is no icon on the page, it’s not a page you should be copying tags from (it is likely a parent page)!

    2. Open the page and find the particular subtag that best describes the card you are adding (e.g. aetiology).
      💡
Note the “multiple parents” means this disease page appears in multiple different subject areas (i.e. Cardiology and Paediatrics). Other details are available on this page for your reference, including status and last updated date.
    3. Click the copy to clipboard icon that appears when hovering over the tag
      💡
Please note that this will also copy over whatever other cards are relevant (e.g. the resources by rotation cardiology tag). This is to make it easier for you to add cards with all the correct tags. Other tags that might be included are Question Banks tags for questions relevant to the topic.
    3) Database Lookup Method
    1. Open the Tags Database and go to the subject tags section
    2. Unfold the topics until you find the disease you are looking for by clicking the triangular arrow head next to each topic
    3. Click on the title of the disease (or topic) you are after to open it in the middle
      📢

If you are searching for a topic, rather than a specific disease (ie. Antenatal Care), you may come across a slightly different topic page, signified by the white info icon.

    Specific Resources (Additional Special Tags*)
    💡
*Some cards may require additional tags beyond a Subject and Rotation tag. The following tags are examples of other scenarios whereby specific additional tags may be added.

💡 Fixing Syncing Issues

Sometimes syncronisation through AnkiHub leads to errors or glitches within Anki. Some examples include: duplicate cards appearing in Browser, tags out of order or missing, or unused tags persisting.

To fix this, try the following as initial troubleshooting which will resolve the vast majority of these problems:

  1. 📝 Sync with AnkiHub

Click AnkiHub > Sync with AnkiHub on the Anki homepage.

  2. 📝 Reset all local changes

Click the ‘Reset all local changes to a deck’ button in the Browser under the AnkiHub drop-down menu.

  3. 📝 Clear Unused Tags

In the Anki Browser, click on Notes > Clear Unused Tags.

  4. 📝 Check Database & Media for Errors

Back on the main Anki page; hover over the ‘Tools’ dropdown menu and try the following:

    • Check Database
    • Check Media
    • Empty Cards
  5. 📝 Delete Deleted Cards Locally

Within the Anki card browser, click on the AnkiHub tag ‘Deleted Notes’ and hold CTRL+A (on Windows) to select all notes with this tag. This will select all notes that have been deleted from the deck and cannot be synced anymore, but still require your final deletion locally. Simply right click and hover over ‘Notes’ > click on ‘Delete note’. Alternatively, you can highlight over the cards and use the shortcut CTRL+delete (Windows). Then sync again with Anki.
